I used to love historical classics the most and it would my first choice. In the past few years I’m more interested in the more recent past and present. However, this beautiful cover and historical fiction set in the Caribbean caught my eye. Based on a real woman, it tells her story of born enslaved and ended up a large land holder who travelled the West Indies, South America and Europe. It sounds so exciting and powerful, I can’t wait for some vacation time to dig in.
I’ll post more about this on TikTok but these are three books that changed by life and I think about all the time.

Many years ago, I was very much a tumblr girl. Somehow I stumbled onto an artist who was working in doodles and photography (yagazieemezi) that I followed onto Instagram. Then I learned of her sibling @azemezi and their writing and art as well. One of my best book event memories was the release of Pet at Books Are Magic. The store was crowded and buzzy, it felt like an important moment.
Summer is a good time for poetry.
Last year lots people seemed really supportive of the Black Lives Matter movement. It took me by surprise- Black Lives Matter really triggers anger in so many people who have no desire to even understand the initial premise - that it was hard to believe that people really changed their minds and were willing to march to demand change.
