Happy Sunday!
I love a funny memoir in essays. The personal essay is able to weave a story in a way that autobiographies can fall flat for me. This one is by a Black Haitian Canadian YA author with a great sense of humor and big Blerd energy. The line that got me was this “Writing is messy and race is messy”. Right now is not a repeat of hashtags and black squares - it’s a time for awkward conversations, learning and action.
I loved reading Queen Sugar. The story was so different than any other I’d ever read even though the characters and environment felt so familiar. I loved the highs and lows of the struggle to get the farm off the ground. I loved reading about how family can both help and hurt you. I’ve never watched the show but I’ve heard amazing things. To top all that off, comes this anthology of essays, art and interviews focusing on Black people and their connection to the American land. It’s so beautiful and rich. If you are looking for a wonderful gift for a loved one this is perfect. You can use the link in my bio to buy a copy for yourself via my affiliate bookshop.org page or you can go directly to @bookshop_org. It celebrated its publication in April 6th 2021 so you can go get it now!
Remember the movie Pursuit of Happyness? I loved that movie - it just felt so right, so telling of the thin line so many of us walk, and how much we’ll do for those we love. It also taught me sometimes we’re mean to those we love because we’re hurting or busy or distracted or scared. The author of the book the movie was inspired by wrote something new - Permission to Dream.
I read a previous novel by this author, A House without Windows and found it beautiful and engaging. It made me realize as well how entire countries and regions go unrecognized and unrepresented in western literature and media. This is one is set in the 70’s when Afghanistan was more progressive (a time period I am interested to read about). This was released March 2, 2021. I love how the opening prologue sets the tension and mood of the book. It starts on a night filled with a scared little girl hiding in a treasure filled room on an eventful night that would change history.
