When a Brazilian born doctor living in London receives a letter from a woman he grew up with, he hides it and reads it obsessively, over and over. In this short novel, we follow the doctor as a young man, wrestling with the expectations of a distant father and the complicated race and class ties of his home. Beautifully written and deeply evocative of youth and the sunny, heat seared Brazil, the novel tells the story of first love and what can drive families apart.
